Description:
Mr. Higgins was picked up as a stray.  He came to us starved, infested with fleas and tics, with very bad ear infections and unhealthy teeth.  He was 15 pounds underweight, suffered hair-loss and had mild separation anxiety while in a crate (tried to dig his way out). Now he's a healthy 62 pounds, his hair has grown back, he's neutered and his ears are clearing up with the help of antibiotics.  His teeth have been cleaned and because he's getting regular meals he's not too fearful of being left alone, although, like most dogs he prefers to be with someone all the time.  He does not need to be crated as he's not destructive at all and gets along with the other dogs in his foster home.  He will chase the cats if they run but he just smells them if he catches up to them, he also sniffs at the rabbit but does not try to hurt it.  He has marked in the house a few times but we are working on this and he has gotten better. Higgins will jump on you when you first get home because he's so excited to see you again and we are working on this. For this reason he would do best in a home without kids under 8. He knows some basic commands like sit, wait, come here and he does not try to run away.  He is a little bit hand shy of some men at first but if they crouch down to pet him he is just fine. If they are standing up he will try to hide from them if they reach for him. His ideal home would be with one or two other dogs or as an only dog that has play dates. He would love a fenced in yard and a warm bed to hang out in near his people. He does not know how to play fetch but does chase the ball, he loves tug of war and running around with another doggie or person.

The petfinder.com system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.

Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all animals before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the animals shoulder blades and are a permanent form of identification. If the animal is ever lost and slips his/her collar/tags the microchip allows the finder to know who to contact if scanned for a microchip. Animals MUST still have a collar with tags on at all times. Per our contract, we take all our animals back if for any reason you can't keep your adopted animal.

Please understand the statements about this animal are based upon the foster home's evaluation of the animal. The animal might behave differently (negatively or positively) in your home. While the animal might be good with the current foster’s dogs, cats, children, etc., it may not be with your animal(s) or children. The animal may be housebroken or litter trained in the home of the foster but may relapse in your home. The animal is represented to the public as it performs in the foster home and any statements made regarding the animal are conditional to that foster home setting. Please understand that statements made regarding this animal are simply overviews and are not guaranteed.
