Description:

9/19/11

I have never had a dog walk so well on a leash, and with a little bit of coaxing he will walk beautifully by your side.  This tall elegant dog is black with beautiful rich chestnut undertones that you can see in the sunlight.  He also has the softest fur imaginable.  No picture could ever do Maxwell justice because part of his charm is his calm, mellow demeanor.  When I stop to talk to neighbors on our walk he visits and gets petted but never jumps and then stands quietly and calmly next to us.  Everyone comments on how well behaved he is.  The only time he pulled at all was when a man with his dog went by on his roller blades.

He gets along beautifully with my little lab who is half his size and they play nicely together and give each other licks.  He is also extremely tolerant of m y little 14 year old Pom who constantly tries to mount him but he barley notices.  He still has a lot of peppy energy and loves, loves, loves stuffed animals especially larger ones.  He spends hours pacing around the house with them in his mouth trying to find a good place to hide each one.  When he is done hiding them even I have a hard time finding them.  He calms down nicely and sometimes he will just sit on the floor staring at me waging his big tail.   His tail does have a s uprising amount of force to it as the other dogs are learning to keep clear of it and I have removed any breakable objects from it's path.
He likes you to be with him when he goes outside.  But I noticed most rescue dogs are like that especially in the beginning when you are still gaining their trust.  However today he went out with my Pom in the rain, he did look back at the door to make sure I was still there.  I was told he would not go outside when it was raining but I think it was more of an issue with a thunder storm.  He completely shuts down when there is a thunder storm and does not even want to be touched.  He will pull his paw away and try to curl into a small ball and tremble.
I have not had to crate him and leave him in a back room alone over night.  However I did have to watch what he gets into and I made sure there was nothing counter level or below that he would find interesting.  My garbage is on top of my stove just in case.  Part of this might just be boredom but it i s best to play it safe.
I have been trying to make him submissive.  I back him up (Ce sar s tyle) into a sit position when it is time to go outside then he goes out last when I say its OK.  (I wish I could do that with my dogs.)   Same thing when we go for a walk.  I also claim all the toys especially the stuffed animals he loves so much.
I have only heard him bark a few times.  He does not wine or cry.  He seems content in his room and sits and waits for me.  I would not leave him in the yard by himself.  I left the yard to go and talk to a neighbor, still within his sight and he started digging a hole.  I think this might be anxiety.   I don't think he would mind being left in a bedroom or Kitchen (but not a bathroom) I would make sure he has toys or he may get board and do some damage.
Maxwell is a very special dog that deserves a very special home.  If you think you can give Maxwell the wonderful home he deserves please fill out an application.  Maxwell still needs to go through his heart-worm treatment and then needs to be neutered before he can become a part of your family.

Maxwell was adopted from an area shelter , The elderly lady said he was the best dog she had ever had , he was gentle with her and very good natured . When she took him to the vets it was discovered he had heartworm .  So she took him back to the shelter where his fate was sealed there. The shelter called us and asked us to please take him because he was such a great dog they did not want to put him down . We have him and he is being treated for heartworm.  He will be good as new shortly.

Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all animals before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the animals shoulder blades and are a permanent form of identification. The microchips are registered to Last Day Dog Rescue with the adopter's info added once adopted. If the animal is ever lost and slips his/her collar/tags the microchip allows the finder to know who to contact if scanned for a microchip. Animals MUST still have a collar with tags on at all times. Per our contract, we take all our animals back if for any reason you can't keep your adopted animal.

Please understand the statements about this animal are based upon the foster home's evaluation of the animal. The animal might behave differently (negatively or positively) in your home. While the animal might be good with the current foster’s dogs, cats, children, etc., it may not be with your animal(s) or children. The animal may be housebroken or litter trained in the home of the foster but may relapse in your home. The animal is represented to the public as it performs in the foster home and any statements made regarding the animal are conditional to that foster home setting. Please understand that statements made regarding this animal are simply overviews and are not guaranteed.

The Petfinder.com system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our animals. Visual breed identification in animals is unreliable so for most of the animals we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each animal as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our animals based on personality, not by breed label.

Thank you for looking through our list of animals needing forever homes and choosing rescue first. We appreciate you stopping by.
