Update on Spencer - 8/6/10
He is still the same old snuggle bug in training, however, this handsome little pup's so full of energy! He is quiet for the most part except for when he asks for attention. He warms up to you very quickly. As for house training, he's fine by himself but when he's with other dogs he gets insecure and "marks" so that they know he's there and know he's someone. He is getting better on learning tricks, and when he's done he'll surely wow you! 6/24/2010: Spencer is a real snuggle bug, and we think you will really like him. He does great with the dog and two cats at his foster home. He doesn't know any commands right now, but that is to be expected as he is so young. We are working with him on "sit" and "quiet" (for when the two dogs start barking at things they see through the window). Spencer is also known as Gordy Howe! So he usually answers to Gordy. He will come when called. He loves water. He will run to the shower or bathtub to get a drink if he hears the water running, and he loves to dunk his head in the waterfall/pond feature at his foster family's home (he usually ends up dunking most of his body too!) Spencer/Gordy definitely enjoys fetch. If he's playing with just you, he will bring the stick back. If he's playing with multiple dogs, even if there are multiple sticks, he wants the one they have so he will run after the other dogs to get their sticks, and completely ignore the one you've thrown for him; we're working on this. We are still working on his housebreaking too. He understands that he is supposed to go outside, but just needs an adopter who is willing to put him on a regular schedule with eating/drinking followed by walks or trips outside at regular intervals. He hasn't yet learned to signal, so we have to take him out frequently just to be on the safe side. We think Spencer/Gordy is a shepherd/shar pei mix. He is very small (maybe 30 lbs) and fully grown. 7/30/2010: Spencer (Gordy) is making progress with his training. Here are a few of the things he knows how to do:
1) Sit on command by saying "Gordy, sit" 2) Will stop chasing the cats, or rough housing with Buddy (other dog in the foster home) by saying "Stop" 3) We say "Go potty" and "Good boy, Gordy" when going to the bathroom outside. 4) He stays behind me when I go up or down stairs. Sometimes needs a reminder if he is distracted. I say "Stay" and then "OK" when he can follow. 5) Comes by saying "Gordy, come." 6) And then "Go get a stick" which he does most of the time on his own. Otherwise we just get one for him. He loves to chew them up and will retrieve them. 7) After being outside, when we enter the house he knows to sit down and wait for his leash to be removed and paws wiped.
We are still working on the housebreaking, but we believe there could be a medical cause behind this because he has made excellent progress with the rest of his training. He will go potty outside, but does have accidents inside. Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all animals before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the animals shoulder blades and are a permanent form of identification. The microchips are registered to Last Day Dog Rescue with the adopter's info added once adopted. If the animal is ever lost and slips his/her collar/tags the microchip allows the finder to know who to contact if scanned for a microchip. Animals MUST still have a collar with tags on at all times. Per our contract, we take all our animals back if for any reason you can't keep your adopted animal. Please understand the statements about this animal are based upon the foster home's evaluation of the animal. The animal might behave differently (negatively or positively) in your home. While the animal might be good with the current foster’s dogs, cats, children, etc., it may not be with your animal(s) or children. The animal may be housebroken or litter trained in the home of the foster but may relapse in your home. The animal is represented to the public as it performs in the foster home and any statements made regarding the animal are conditional to that foster home setting. Please understand that statements made regarding this animal are simply overviews and are not guaranteed. The Petfinder.com system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our animals. Visual breed identification in animals is unreliable so for most of the animals we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each animal as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our animals based on personality, not by breed label. Thank you for looking through our list of animals needing forever homes and choosing rescue first. We appreciate you stopping by.Other Pictures of Spencer AKA Gordy - ADOPTED 11.03.10 (click to see larger version):
