Our luna

by Maria Sietz, LDDR Adoptor

Shortly after I was married, we found our first dog.  A puppy wandering on the side of a busy road with no ID, only a flea collar… I always thought, (and still do), that she was the smartest dog I ever knew & worthy of a TV show.  She was also the kindest family pet & we were so blessed to have her for 16 years.  Being truly irreplaceable, it took me a few years to cave to pressure from my children to get another dog.  “We need a dog!” one of them begged!  So, without much thought, & a local newspaper ad, came our super cute JRT.  True to breed, she was smart & fun, enemy to critters, a digger, & dominant presence, but loyal only to me. Always my constant companion, I was deeply depressed when she became ill & we had to make that difficult decision to let her go..

But, after that, thoughts of a new pet came rather soon. We knew that the pain of losing our family dog shouldn’t keep us from the joy that pet ownership so often brings. lunaB

Within a few months I started the search.  This time, we had made a decision to adopt from a shelter, shortly after my grown daughter had done so & found a great little guy now named Rocky.  At first, I was hesitant to even look online because I cannot watch the terribly sad animal neglect/abuse commercials without sobbing.  So, it took me a LONG time to finally take a peek at various sites. When I discovered there was a rescue  in Livonia where I live, I was drawn to it.  Yes, some of the bio’s are very sad, but I kept thinking positively, remembering these dogs had been rescued, were safe now, and would find a home meant for them; and, one was right for us…One morning, I found a little dog that had some of the same physical qualities of ones we had before, but with bigger, sadder eyes & longer, skinnier legs…she looked somewhat like a tiny deer, so I wrote a quick inquiry.  That day, I got a phone call from her foster,  learning about the girl behind the photo, and that evening, we met our future family member!  I knew the moment I saw her approaching our door that she was about to be the next chapter in our life.  Her qualities included a constant wagging tail, a sweet and loving disposition, a 4ft. standing leap of joy, & an equal love for both my husband and me & everyone she met.  She quickly made herself at home when on day two she discovered a bag of toys put away in the basement after our last dog died.  She not only found the forgotten bag, but dragged it upstairs, basically saying “Hey…are these mine, and when were you planning on giving them to me???”

lunaCNo dog can take the place of a previous one.  What they do instead is open a brand new place in your heart.  Knowing she was abandoned and deemed not wanted or worthy to be saved by some, only makes me love her more.  How grateful I am for the people behind LDDR who recognize the value and love these animals posess.  The work they do makes it possible for people like me to enjoy a new loyal & loving companion.  I thank them all for their time, energy and devotion to make certain that life long healthy matches are made, ensuring a safe & happy future for their deserving animals. They have a special ability to look beyond a sad beginning or difficult circumstance & believe in a better future.for every deeply deserving dog (or cat!).  I am so proud to be an LDDR adopter!  I encourage anyone considering adoption to take a look, & give them the opportunity to match you with the pet meant just for you.  The animals are there and they are waiting; always ready to give unconditional love & joy to those ready to provide a safe & forever home.  Please don’t hesitate to give LDDR a call to serve you!  They WILL personally assist you on your journey to a happier home!  This is what they did for us, Maria & John, proud adopters of Carrie/Luna! With very special thanks to Dawn, her foster…
